Before, During and After the San Bruno Fire

As investigators continue to search for the cause of a natural gas pipeline explosion in the San Francisco suburb of San Bruno last week, which triggered a deadly fire in a residential neighborhood, images showing the scope of the disaster have been posted online.

As Queena Kim pointed out on the Bay Citizen blog, Mike Pegg, the founder of Google Maps Mania, created a striking comparison of one street before and after the explosion.

An Associated Press interactive graphic gives a broader view of the damage.

On Google’s official blog, Laszlo Bock noted that updated satellite imagery of the neighborhood is available for Google Earth. He also posted this before and after comparison:

Mr. Bock also explained that the offices of Google’s YouTube are about two miles away from the site of the main gas explosion in San Bruno.

On Sunday, Walter McCaffrey, an eyewitness to the fire who lives just up the street from the site of the gas explosion, posted three short iPhone video clips on YouTube showing the fire soon after it began. One, shot from his deck, is embedded at the top of this post. Here are two others:
