Woman hit in face with acid-like liquid, attacker said, 'Hey pretty girl, want to drink this?'
VANCOUVER, Wash. — Someone threw acid, or another noxious substance, onto a woman's face Monday evening, injuring her, police said.
The attack was reported at West Eighth and Columbia streets, in the area of Esther Short Park, according to preliminary information.
Vancouver police were called to the scene about 7:30 p.m. Monday, officials said.
Officer Dave Chamblee called The Columbian about 11:15 p.m. Monday and said that a patrol officer who's investigating the case was still at a hospital with the victim, nearly four hours after the attack. Chamblee said the initial report was that acid was thrown in the woman's face, and said that hadn't been confirmed. But he said some type of "noxious substance" was thrown in the woman's face and injured her.
Chamblee said he couldn't say which hospital the woman was taken to. Earlier indications were that she was transported to Portland's Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, which operates a burn center.
One official said the attack was believed to have been random, suggesting that the assailant and victim didn't know each other.
However, Chamblee, a designated department spokesman, said late Monday that the investigating officer hadn't yet briefed him on such details. No suspect information was immediately available.
The victim's name and medical condition were not available at The Columbian's press time.
Chamblee said he'd heard of no previous such cases in Vancouver.
