FLASHBACK: Prison Planet Archive – Elite Sex Rings

One of Portugal’s most famous television presenters and a former ambassador to Unesco were among those who abused boys in a paedophile ring involving the country’s state-run orphanages, according to a court verdict released today.

The verdict being read out today at a Lisbon court brings to an end the long-running scandal over a child prostitution racket involving young boys from the Casa Pia network of orphanages.

Clients included people from the country’s professional, government and media elites, according to trial evidence. Systematic sexual abuse involving orphanage employees was also revealed.

Newspaper websites and television stations provided live running coverage of this morning’s reading of what the Portuguese legal system calls the “proven facts” of a case that has shocked the country.

Former secretary of state for families Teresa Costa Macedo, who presented the evidence to Ramalho Eanes and sent a dossier to police that was later lost, said she received anonymous threats by phone and post.

“They said they would kill me, flay me and a lot of other things,” she said.

"Members of Portugal's media, civil service and professional elite were alleged to be regular abusers of the boys, some younger than 14. Even well-known politicians were involved, it was initially rumoured. A flood of accusations from boys who had passed through the Casa Pia system followed. Some 32 boys alleged at least 800 crimes.

The case pitted the orphanage boys against a group of well-educated, influential people – including a former ambassador to Unesco, a lawyer, a doctor and Cruz. Yesterday, eight years after they dared to speak out, the boys finally won their case.

The four men and two former orphanage employees received sentences of between just under six years and 18 years. Carlos Silvino, a 53-year-old Casa Pia worker who confessed to 600 crimes and gave evidence against other defendants was sentenced to 18 years."

The full judgment, which reportedly reached several thousand pages, took several hours to read out.

The Casa Pia scandal broke in November 2002 when an inmate of the home for youngsters in difficult circumstances told the press of being raped by Silvino.

Other residents and former residents came forward to tell of rapes and "special evenings."

In March 2006, a court ordered the Portuguese government to pay $2.5 million in compensation to 44 former Casa Pia residents, saying it had failed in its duty to protect the children.

"The Casa Pia is a Portuguese institution founded by Mary I, known as "Pia" (Pious, in English), and organized by Police Intendant Pina Manique in 1780, following the social disarray of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. For almost three centuries, thousands of young boys and girls were raised by Casa Pia, including many public personalities, called casapianos. Casa Pia is Portugal's largest educational institution dedicated to helping youngsters in risk of social exclusion or without parental support.

The organisation is composed of ten schools and enrolls approximately 4700 students. In addition to standard schooling, the organisation also provides boarding for children in need. It strives to enable these youngsters to become healthy and successful members of society, by developing intellectual, manual, and physical traits, in an environment promoting spiritual, moral, and religious values. The institution is proud to have had amongst its students many outstanding Portuguese personalities, including politicians, journalists, and artists."
