'Second Life' Creator Linden Lab Cuts Staff By 30 Percent

Linden Lab, the company behind the 3D virtual world Second Life, announced this week that it will cut its staff by 30 percent.
The move will "enhance ease of use and participation in [Second Life's] virtual goods marketplace through browser-based and mobile applications," Linden Lab said in a statement.
The layoffs will affect customer support as well as Linden's software development teams, which Linden said will be consolidated in North America. The company also said it will combine its product and engineering divisions.
"We've emerged from a two-year investment period during which, among other things, we've spent a considerable amount of time improving reliability and the overall user experience," Mark Kingdon, chief executive officer of Linden Lab, said in a statement. "Today's announcement about our reorganization will help us make Second Life even simpler, more enjoyable, relevant and engaging for consumers starting with their first experience. It will also enable us to invest in bringing 3D to the web and will strengthen our profitability."
Linden Lab also said the layoffs will help the company focus on the creation of a browser-based virtual world experience, as well as expand Second Life into the social networking arena.
"Ultimately, we want to make Second Life more accessible and relevant to a wider population," Kingdon said.
