The Roman Empires borders crumbled, too, when they ran out of money to maintain their vast "worldwide" military empire, and their new conquests failed to bring in enough loot to maintain the system.
We are witnessing the fall of our own "Empire". This is what it looks like, among other things.
We don't have the resources right now to defend our own borders (in terms of money and personnel) and maintain our foreign wars of conquest (Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia etc.)
So, as far as the border is concerned, we don't really even try. Token forces are deployed, but it is all smoke and mirrors to placate the sheep who otherwise might be a little alarmed that Mexican drug gangs were going to take over their house in the middle of the night and the government wouldn't lift a finger to help them.
