Scientific proof that the Deepwater oil plume is over 20 miles long

Today scientists revealed the results of an investigation into the severity of the Deepwater oil spill. The plume of petroleum hydrocarbon chemicals measures a staggering 22 miles long, and has settled in a deep underwater layer (see photo).

The actual existence of the plume was in some doubt until a team of researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution provided incontrovertible proof. The researchers managed to catch up with the plume about three miles southwest of the original blowout location, then used a remote-controlled submarine and an underwater spectrometer to figure out its dimensions. They were able to study the plume for ten days in June before Hurricane Alex forced them from the area. It's still not known whether this was the only plume or whether others formed, and the team said at a press conference today that they would be unwilling to commit themselves either way on that point.

Their work took place roughly two months after the initial explosion, and measurements show that it the plume was approximately 1,100 meters deep (as you can see in the top image), over 35 kilometers long, 200 meters high and up to 2 kilometers wide.

Their findings showed conclusively that the hydrocarbons found in this plume could not have come from natural seepage, and that the Deepwater Horizon spill must be the primary culprit for the plume. Beyond its staggering dimensions, there's the question of just how long the plume will take to biodegrade - it's already lasted longer than expected, and microbes don't seem to be doing much to break up the oil. As Woods Hole geochemist Christopher Reddy puts it:

"We don't know how toxic it is and we don't know how it formed, or why. But knowing the size, shape, depth, and heading of this plume will be vital for answering many of these questions."

As big as the plume is - and as oily as the surface water can look - the hydrocarbons in the plume - only exist at 50 micrograms per liter, and the deepest water was clear. Of course, hydrocarbons in the plume make up only about 6 to 7 percent of the total hydrocarbons that leaked from the well. The hydrocarbons found in the plume are known as BTEX hydrocarbons after their first letters - benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene.

Those four chemicals make up about 1 percent of the oil in the Gulf of Mexico region, and their particular presence helped confirm that it was the Deepwater spill in particular that had created the plume. As the researchers stressed at today's press conference, there are many other chemicals that make up petroleum, and they're still working on why these ended up in the plume while others didn't.

In a press conference today, Reddy stressed that we still don't know quite how the plume fits into the oil spill as a whole:

All I can tell you is that we found the plume and I can't tell you how much oil was in it because we don't have the values yet. We know there is a plume, we know its links, we know its shape. We know that we collected water samples in it and when we have analyzed those samples, we'll be able to constrain how much – what the inventory of those compounds were in there. And at that point we may be able to see whether it's a penny in a very big checkbook, I mean a checking account or maybe it's bigger. And at that point, you know, the key thing right here in this whole oil spill science is we have to balance patience and urgency. And in some cases I think that patience in a virtue, in other cases we have to balance with urgency and at this point I would say in our case I would comment more when I have more analytical data.

Although it's not oil itself, there's also a massive clump of its constituent chemicals moving slowly underneath (and in the air above) the Gulf of Mexico - so the damage stretches well beyond the visually obvious plume. As the researchers admit, it's going to take months to figure out what all this means for the already damaged marine environment.

K: It is as it has always been and i no longer hold my breath. It’s not that i don’t believe You, it’s just that there seems to be some sort of galactic jet lag or something involved that has taught me to think that something that is said to be happening yesterday may be weeks or even months away. I’ve been doing the DNA thing with you in the headquarters and working on my little project, as it were, that keeps me busy and so i don’t feel like i’m just waiting, but...i would like to get on with it. Gaia says that she’s ready and she’s not holding back and her concern for her children is tempered by her knowledge that everything and everyone will be put in their proper place so there’s no need to worry there and there is only the doing of it..

Now, all of the sudden, there’s oil spilling in the ocean, it seems like everywhere and all of this seems to be deliberate acts of the dark idiots to further stall, but i don’t see the logic of that unless they don’t believe anything You say at all...which is weird since they spend so much time working on and around what You say. But if the gulf is going to inundated and Florida flooding over and out and a big methane cloud covers the gulf coast going inland and ships come and pick up who they can...and if so many appear that it can’t remain hidden or covered up or denied, what’s the point?

CM: WE are not distracted by their games and our waiting is not to determine our next move, as it were. That move has already been decided, as well as several others that are ongoing and some more that shall be implemented all at once. They cannot control the planet. They cannot stop Gaia from moving. As you like to say, they cannot stop Atlas from shrugging. As to when...it is not up to us, it is up to Gaia. WE can help and gauge and control energies from your sun and from Jupiter and from other sources in the cosmos, but it is not something that can make a free will planet such as the one you inhabit to do anything against her will or before she is ready.

These many years, WE have been fighting the good fight beside you, creating circumstances or countering and overcoming the efforts of the dark to continue and survive. WE have been as gracious and merciful as possible, always with the thought of awakening the sleeping and revealing the dark veil that has covered your eyes from perceiving and seeing the true reality in which you exist. Now WE are, again, at a point of no return. WE have progressed in our knowledge of such a field a play as has been given as so many of you have progressed in your knowledge of yourselves and ourselves.

You have created this debacle that rings the end of your dark system of things, of selfishness and greed and slavery and abuse and fear and ignorance and separation. You have been forced to do and be things that you do not need or want to do or be, so many of you without your knowledge or consent. Nay, too many times have you been unawares of the machinations that have led your lives to be this or that while you wonder to yourselves = “What happened? How did I get here?”

Your elite power brokers see you and use you as slaves. They use each other and this is one of the main reasons why they must and will fail. It is why you watch them fail before your eyes, even now.

Slavery can exist on many levels. The dark system which you are subject to allows for no escape and counters all dissent in vicious lies, manipulations and murders. This is the arena that you struggle to dismantle for only in destroying the field can the game end with your freedom won. It matters little if you are rich or poor, a slave is a slave and the only question that you need ask yourself once your eyes are open to this condition is: “How shall I gain my sovereign freedom and the freedom of these, my brothers and sisters, under such circumstances? How can I aid in the dismantling of this arena and field so that a new, fair and balanced field in an arena of light and love and Divine Will may take its place?”

You live your lives hoping and praying for release, for help, for miracles and you have learned that, while all of these things are given and made manifest for you by the Will and Power of SOURCE I AM and by I AM THAT I AM and by Spirit Eternal and by My own Sovereign Divinity in the universe of My own making that I may serve you all in helping and teaching you to awaken to your true nature and selves and thus, your true power = and you have learned of that, some of you, and have accepted that your release and help and miracles come also through you, through SOURCE and I AM in you and as you, and you have opened an eye or two to your own divinity and the unity with ALL THAT IS, the unity of ONE and all of the rights and powers thereof, that is and are your birthright as intelligent, freewill, ascending and descending beings = for truly some of you are descending beings that came to experience ascension = The thoughts, concepts, ideas and actions that you create in such a state of being all contribute to the dismantling of the dark agenda and field, their arena. It is your unified efforts towards this goal of ascension and the new arena it brings that makes this works. You work, you do the work, alongside Gaia, MYSELF, SOURCE, the Spiritual Hierarchy, The ELOHIM, The Angelic and Archangelic Hosts, The nature spirits, the Agarthans, the Galactic Federation of Light and many others, some you know of and others you have no idea of, from all over the Grand Creation of Paradise and the seven superuniverses.

This is no small task and no small feat. It is being done with the utmost care and precision and consideration for all involved. I know that many of you would prefer us to just move in and do away with the dark ones in no uncertain terms, and that may yet happen if they insist. But this is how WE roll, if I may be allowed to use such a term, and were it not for our insistence upon acting in all due love and light and compassion an mercy, you all would have been gone from this planet already and Gaia would be waiting a very long time to see her shores inhabited once again.

I say this only to illustrate to you that there have always been many and diverse options available towards how best to achieve the Divine Goal of Ascension for Gaia and for you and always, ALWAYS have WE joyfully bowed to the wonderful wisdom of The Paradise Father in these matters and ALWAYS HAS THE WILL OF PARADISE DEITY BEEN DONE! It is My Glory to act as such and always have I been joyful in it.

So, now the time has come and the dark are laughing and the sleeping have turned their backs on the notion of a greater reality and even many of the awakened faithful few have fallen to the same thought: Put up or shut up.

How shall I, even I, respond to this? Shall I be offended and deal out holy wrath like in your storied days of old? Always have I sought to show Divine Kindness and Mercy, shall I stop now?

Shall I just send thousands of ships to prove a point? Take over the airwaves and introduce Myself to the world that knows Me not?

Good evening, I AM Your God?

Shall I send the Angelic hosts to proclaim this or that?
It seems to me that you have done enough on your own, one way or the other. I see a tipping point.

I even thank the dark ones that helped so much in making their own destruction possible. I thank also the truth bringers and the light bearers. So many have died for this cause of freedom, true freedom = a freedom you have never known, but will.
I say that all of our efforts have not been in vain and that WE have done the right thing by all involved.

I tell you of things that will happen, that must happen, because you made it so, all of you. Your abuse of the planet and even your efforts to save the planet, your being awake or asleep, light or dark, all and everything has come to this and it will take it’s natural course and progress to its fulfillment and nothing will hold it back or delay it or hurry it. Nothing that can be done will stop it. It is made and anchored in your reality and Divine Will-in-Acceptance, it is natural law, it is nature = it is your response to the Divine Mandate of Ascension and so it is.

So when I tell you that the gulf oil spill is still and yet doomed to become a tragedy of epic proportions, I know whereof I speak. Ye ones may do as you please about any and all of this, WE see little, if anything, that will change in you at this point. All of you have chosen your places and that is that. The crack will widen, the methane bubble will burst with the full force of nature behind it. The waves will go out. The waves will come. The cloud of gas will spread. The ships will go out. They will come to rescue who they can. The world will see the truth of life in the UNIVERSE. They will see the results of their folly and they will hear our words and see Divine Truth...Alas, it will be too late to change.......

And I will not have to put or shut up a thing for WE let you experience the circumstances of your own making and that is that and that is how it should be.

I did such and so much even for Lucifer, before he chose uncreation...should I do less for you?

LIVE, LEARN, GROW, EVOLVE, CHANGE! This is all you have to do and be. It is within you now, all and everything that you need is within you now. Let it be what it must be and fear not, neither let your heart be worried or concerned.

It comes, like counting the time between lightening and thunder....do they not both happen at the same time?

Work for the future, your new lives in a new arena. Be ready and prepared for the great changes that are coming and will come. You are building a great Universal society founded on and with Divine Will. As you shall be, so shall your society, your world be. Your thoughts and concepts and ideas and actions...remember?

I urge you to grow and evolve into Divine Will and The Law of One. Do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Do not create a future based upon old, destructive values. Be God on Earth. Be Divine Will with and within you all as one. This is the goal that shall sustain you onto perpetuity as the shining jewel of My Universe of Nebadon. This is what you are meant to be. You are all My children and I love you. You cannot let me down or fail Me, for in the annals of infinity and eternity, all of you will evolve into perfect and divine unity and power and light and life and love = eventually. This is an opportunity, a Divine opportunity for you to create, in partnership and conjunction with Divinity, the ability to do that now.

Do not fail yourselves. I AM with all of you but to what avail if you are not with each other?

The time comes, it is near. You will get there and you will see it and you will be there to do it, to be it.

Do not fail yourselves and do not fail each other. I promise not to fail you.

St. Petersburg, Fla. - Through a chemical fingerprinting process, University of South Florida researchers have definitively linked clouds of underwater oil in the northern Gulf of Mexico to BP's runaway Deepwater Horizon well — the first direct scientific link between the subsurface oil clouds commonly known as "plumes" and the BP oil spill, USF officials said Friday.



Until now, scientists had circumstantial evidence, but lacked that definitive scientific link.

The announcement came on the same day that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that its researchers have confirmed the existence of the subsea plumes at depths of 3,300 to 4,300 feet below the surface of the Gulf. NOAA said its detection equipment also implicated the BP well in the plumes' creation.

Eureka - they found it, unfortunately. Scientists, using an underwater robot, located one of the giant plumes of BP oil looming under the Gulf of Mexico. Host Jeff Young talks with ocean scientist James Cowan of Louisiana State University about their probe’s journey through the subsurface oil.

COWAN: We went off the mouth of the Mississippi River and were able to detect what appeared to be dispersed oil down to depths ranging from 250-350 feet below the surface and we brought it to the surface and it was clearly dispersed oil. And underwater it looked like spherical globules about the size of a marble drifting in the water column.

YOUNG: So, what do you think is going on about what is keeping the oil beneath the surface rather than coming to the surface?

COWAN: The use of dispersants at depth obviously was a novel idea. I think it was probably a mistake because some of these dispersed oils are getting to a point where they are mutually buoyant in the water column and remaining there without rising.

YOUNG: So, did I hear you correctly? You think the use of dispersants, deep-sea, was a mistake?

COWAN: I absolutely do.

YOUNG: Why's that?

COWAN: Well, first of all, the dispersants are quite toxic, but at the surface they break down very quickly. At depth we don't know anything about how long the toxicity remains. We don't know how quickly the dispersants break down and whether it seems that dispersing the oil has changed, in some way has changed, its specific gravity and might be part of the reason why it's staying at depth.

YOUNG: Now, BP's chief executive Tony Hayward has weighed in on this notion of oil beneath the surface. He essentially says there is no evidence there are these deep-water plumes. And he says essentially look, oil is lighter than water, it will come to the top. That's what it wants to do. What would you tell Mr. Hayward about what you're finding?

COWAN: I would suggest he read an NRC report that was done in 2003 called "Oil in the Sea," and it shows clearly in there the physics of how oil can be suspended in the water column. And I can understand why he's saying what he's saying, but I don't think the evidence supports it. And certainly there is plenty of evidence in the literature that suggests oil can be suspended in layers and even on the bottom.

YOUNG: And is there any way of mitigating the damage down there? Do we have any way to deal with oil in the deep water?

COWAN: Not to my knowledge. I think that's going to be something we're just going to have to see weather in place and degrade over time. I'm afraid that the toxicity of the oil, the fact that it's mixed with dispersants probably makes the problem more difficult.

Oil in and of itself is a hydrocarbon and there are communities that can consume it, microbial communities in particular. But we don't know very much about the toxicity of the dispersants, so there's so many unknowns it's very difficult to say how this could play out in the long term.

YOUNG: Now this area that we're talking about in the Northern Gulf near the mouth of the Mississippi, this is a place where we have this so-called "dead zone" of low oxygen. How might the oil, especially oil deep in the water, affect the oxygen that's available to marine life in the water?

COWAN: Well, actually, the dead zone is confined to a much shallower region on the shelf. But the important point is that oil is a hydrocarbon and it's broken down by the consumption by bacteria and bacteria consume oxygen in the process. If there's oil added to the mix that's another serious concern because it could, in fact, increase the decline in oxygen levels in the hypoxic zone.

YOUNG: So what happens if the oil contributes to even lower levels of oxygen?

COWAN: Well, I just think there are more unknowns than knowns right now. And I think that's because of the novelty of the situation, and where the material is actually going, and what it is when it gets there. So I think we're all kind of flying by the seat of our pants.

Its BPs oil

The blockade to Elmer's is now four cop cars strong. As we pull up, deputies start bawling us out; all media need to go to the Grand Isle community center, where a "BP Information Center" sign now hangs out front. Grand Isle residents are not amused by the beach closing.Inside, a couple of Times-Picayune reporters circle BP representative Barbara Martin, who tells them that if they want passage to Elmer they have to get it from another BP rep, Irvin Lipp; Grand Isle beach is closed too, she adds. When we inform the Times-Pic reporters otherwise, she asks Dr. Hazlett if he's a reporter; he says, "No." She says, "Good." She doesn't ask me. We tell her that deputies were just yelling at us, and she seems truly upset. For one, she's married to a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy. For another, "We don't need more of a black eye than we already have."

"But it wasn't BP that was yelling at us, it was the sheriff's office," we say.

"Yeah, I know, but we have…a very strong relationship."

"What do you mean? You have a lot of sway over the sheriff's office?"

"Oh yeah."

"How much?"

"A lot."

When I tell Barbara I am a reporter, she stalks off and says she's not talking to me, then comes back and hugs me and says she was just playing. I tell her I don't understand why I can't see Elmer's Island unless I'm escorted by BP. She tells me BP's in charge because "it's BP's oil."

"But it's not BP's land."

"But BP's liable if anything happens."

"So you're saying it's a safety precaution."

"Yeah! You don't want that oil gettin' into your pores."

"But there are tourists and residents walking around in it across the street."

"The mayor decides which beaches are closed." So I call the Grand Isle police requesting a press liason, only to get routed to voicemail for "Melanie" with BP. I call the police back and ask why they gave me a number for BP; they blame the fire chief.

I reach the fire chief. "Why did the police give me a number for BP?" I ask.

"That's the number they gave us."

"Who?"

"BP."

When I tell Chief Audrey Chaisson that I would like to get a comment on Barbara's intimations—and my experience so far—that BP is running the show, he says he'll meet me in a parking lot. He pulls in, rolls down the window of his maroon Monte Carlo, and tells me that I can't trust the government or big corporations. When everyone saw the oil coming in as clear as day several days before that, BP insisted it was red tide—bacteria. Chaisson says he's half-Indian and grew up here and just wants to protect the land. When I tell him BP says the inland side of the island is still clean, he spits. "They're fucking liars. There's oil over there. It's already all up through the pass." The spill workers staying at my motel later tell me they've been specifically instructed by BP not to talk to any media, but they're pissed because BP tried to tell them that the crude they were swimming around in to move oil containment boom was red tide, dishwashing-liquid runoff, or mud.

The next morning at breakfast, the word at Sarah's Restaurant is that the island will have to be shut down; the smell of oil was so strong last night one lady had to shut all her windows and turn on her AC; if her asthma keeps up like this, she'll need to go on her breathing machine tonight.

Local workers make ten dollars an hour cleaning up the same beach again and again.I've corralled Irvin Lipp, who drives me and a few wire photographers out to Elmer's. The shoreline is packed with men in hats and gumboots and bright blue shirts. Nearly all are African-American, all hired from around New Orleans. They tell me they've been standing in these exact same spots for three days. It's breathtakingly hot. They rake the oil and sand into big piles; other workers collect the piles into big plastic bags, and still other workers take them to a plant where the sand is separated out and sent to a hazardous-waste dump and the oil goes on for processing. Then the tide comes in with more oil and everybody starts all over again. Ten dollars an hour. Twelve hours a day. When I joke with one worker that he should pocket the solid gobs of oil he's digging up to show me how far beneath the sand they go, he stops dead and asks me if BP's still trying to use the oil they all collect. "Aw, I knew it!" he says. Another leans on his rake to ask me, "Have they at least shut the oil off yet?" He randomly picks three spots in a three-foot-wide expanse of sand that he's already raked clean and drops his rake in an inch deeper to show me how the oil bubbles up from underneath. He can't count how many times he's raked this same spot in the 33 hours he's worked it since Thursday, but one thing he's sure of, he says, is that he'll be standing right here tomorrow and the next day, too.They take these bags to a plant and separate out the sand so they can process the oil. Another problem is that after surface cleanup, raking the sand brings up more oil.
